چکیده
The financial crisis that swept across northern Europe in 1763 bears an uncanny resemblance to more recent episodes of financial market turbulence in particular, to the events of autumn 1998 when mature financial markets were caught in a severe liquidity crisis, culminating in the near collapse of Long-Term Capital Management. We highlight the salient features of the 1763 crisis, propose a stylized model of the events, and draw parallels between the events of 1763 and 1998. Whilst the financial landscape has changed fundamentally in the intervening two hundred or so years, the policy lessons have a resonance that transcend this gap in time. The potentially devastating effects of liquidity risk, the limits to hedging and financial engineering, and the importance of timely crisis management by the authorities are all lessons that have currency today as they did in 1763. ∗We are indebted to Steve Cecchetti, Charles Goodhart, Martin Hellwig, Nobu Kiyotaki, Jamie McAndrews, Will Roberds and Peter Sinclair for their comments on earlier drafts. We thank Rainer Metz, Hans-Jürgen Gerhard and Alexander Engel for their support in the collection of the commodity price data. We have benefited from the comments of participants at the Bank of England conference on capital flows and seminar participants at the University of Mannheim and the Bank for International Settlements. †E-mail: [email protected] ‡E-mail: [email protected]

In an experimental 2x2 coordination game with two strict equilibria we observe that, in contrast to equilibrium selection theory (Harsanyi and Selten 1988), only half of the subjects choose the strategy that relates to the payoffand risk-dominant equilibrium. We propose modified risk dominance as an explanation for the observed deviations from payoff and risk dominance. JEL classification: C72,...

Auctions have been developed for economic transactions with asymmetric information and they are the simplest means of price determination for multilateral trading without ‘market makers.’ During the last years, new technologies gave a boost to the development and usage of innovative auction formats in several fields. We explore some of the new possibilities of applications and explain the diffe...

The curvature of utility functions varies between people. We suggest that there exists a relationship between the mode in which a person usually makes a decision and the curvature of the individual utility function. In a deliberate decision mode, a decisionmaker tends to have a nearly linear utility function. In an intuitive decision mode, the utility function is more curved. In our experiment ...

In this paper, we propose a measure of individual investor sentiment that is derived from the market for bank-issued warrants. Due to a unique warrant transaction data set from a large discount broker we are able to calculate a daily sentiment measure and test whether individual investor sentiment is related to daily stock returns by using vector autoregressive models and Granger causality test...
